Have you always wanted to learn how to use a hand plane?
Do you have a hand plane in the shed you inherited and want to use but don't know how?
In this workshop all the mysteries of hand planing will be revealed as you take a rough-sawn board of beautiful Tasmanian Blackwood and transform it into a remarkable grazing board with stunning grain character that is sure to impress at your next social event!
This workshop is for absolute beginners, and for those who would like to gain an in-depth knowledge of plane anatomy, and how to set up, adjust and use hand planes.

What you get
A beautiful, completed grazing board to take home at the end of the workshop. Ideal as a table centerpiece at which all your guests can marvel and make comment on your new woodworking skills.
Your choice of black or chrome finish handles as seen in the images above.
A small friendly class of six or less.
All safety equipment is provided
Morning Tea for mid class break.
Kitchen facilities with a microwave and fridge are free to use.
What you will learn
Workshop and hand tool safety.
Timber grain and structure and how to read it.
Skills for accurate measuring and marking out.
Hand plane anatomy and how to set and adjust planes for different situations.
How to prepare a rough-sawn board for use, including flattening and sizing.
Hand planing techniques, tips and tricks for great results.
How to use cabinet scrapers to create a perfect surface after planing.
How to fit handles to your board.
Surface preparation and application of 100% natural traditional hand-made food safe finishes.
Tools you'll learn how to use
Try square, pencil, steel rule, scratch awl, marking knife and marking gauge
Drills including a carpenters swing brace and bit, and eggbeater drill
Smoothing plane, jack plane, block plane, scraper plane and cabinet scraper
Plane 'shooting' board
Phillips screwdriver
Sanding block and garnet paper (if required)
Paintbrush and hand made traditional tung oil finish and beeswax polish
What to bring
Fully enclosed shoes, leather if possible.
Your own food if you have specific dietary requirements.

Booking information
To secure your spot book online below with a $50 deposit.
You will receive an email containing your receipt for the deposit and account details to pay the balance via bank transfer (or call us to organise to pay in cash).
Please check your junk email folder if your booking confirmation and deposit receipt do not appear in your email inbox immediately.
We ask that payments be finalised at least seven days before the workshop.
When the payment has cleared you will receive a receipt for the balance via email.
Please contact us if you wish to pay the balance by card. This will incur a 2.2% fee

Byron Roberts

Byron teaches woodworking as both a skill and a soulful, mindfulness experience. He teaches people to understand the wood and how it feels to work it with traditional edge tools. His workshops are lively, hands-on journeys where laughter mingles with sawdust, and everyone leaves with a smile and a piece of woodwork to be proud of. Byron is a highly qualified educator with a Bachelor of Industrial Design, Graduate Diploma of Education, a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, and 21 years of teaching and technical education experience.
