Come and learn to work with wood!

Our Home Schoolers Woodworking Classes are all about the development of young people. We teach the joy of working with wood; valuable practical skills and knowledge for lifelong learning, creativity and self-sufficiency. In a small class of 6 students will gain a hands-on experience and have fun using traditional hand tools while developing manual dexterity, patience, focus and confidence through meaningful skills-based learning. Courses are designed to encourage self-development through the mindfulness and physical activity experienced in the rhythm of handwork, resilience through finding opportunities in mistakes and environmental and social awareness when making something enduring with natural materials. Come and join in at the Ladysmith Hall or contact us to organise a pop up workshop for your venue.

  • Level 1 – fundamentals for all beginners ages 12-15+

  • Level 2 – for those who have completed level 1

Projects

Students will complete a range of projects that increase in complexity as the course progresses through the Levels, allowing students to develop practical competence, autonomy and the ability to meet greater challenges in each Level. From simple items to more complex projects that utilise the essential joinery structures used in woodworking: frames and boxes.

Projects will be adapted to suit each group of students and/or individuals to meet their needs as required.

Projects will encompass these core woodworking processes:

  • Working safely

  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings (literacy and numeracy)

  • Accurate measuring and marking

  • Cutting, drilling and shaping

  • Joining

  • Use of fasteners and hardware

  • Surface preparation and finish

  • Each project is carefully designed and taught by a qualified Industrial Arts Teacher and Industrial Designer with 23 years of experience as an educator, and can be linked to the NSW Stage 4 and 5 Industrial Technology – Timber syllabus.

Students will also gain an appreciation and understanding of woodworking from a historical perspective as the tools they will use are vintage, antique or contemporary duplicates.
