Spoon Makers Workshop

Spend a day crafting an heirloom wooden cooking spoon with your very own hands from a beautiful piece of seasoned timber using traditional vintage tools and a spoon maker's horse.
Be confident with guidance from a qualified instructor who will guide you through the process of shaping a raw piece of wood into a beautiful finished spoon you will use to cook meals for your friends and family for years to come.
What you get
Morning tea, lunch and a beautiful completed spoon to take home.
A small friendly class of six or less.
All safety equipment is provided including leather aprons and cut resistant gloves for those who would like to try their hand at axe work.
What you will learn about
Learn about timber grain and working with traditional edge tools.
Choose a template or create your own design.
Use a cross-cut saw and carpenter's axe and chopping block to to cut your spoon blank.
Shape your spoon with easy to use drawknives and spokeshaves.
Carve your spoon's bowl with a gouge and scraper.
Sandpaper to smooth (optional).
Finish with an all natural woodware finish; hand made in-house using pure essential oils, tung oil and beeswax from our own hives.
What to bring
Fully enclosed shoes, leather if possible.
Kitchen facilities with a microwave and fridge are free to use if you need.

Who: This workshop is suitable for 14yrs+. Participants 16yrs and under must be accompanied by a parent who must also have booked a spot.

Booking information
To secure your spot book online below with a $50 deposit.
You will receive an email containing your receipt for the deposit and account details to pay the balance via bank transfer (or call us to organise to pay in cash).
Please check your junk email folder if your booking confirmation and deposit receipt do not appear in your email inbox immediately.
We ask that payments be finalised at least seven days before the first session.
When the payment has cleared you will receive a receipt for the balance via email.
Please contact us if you wish to pay the balance by card. This will incur a 2.2% fee

Byron Roberts

Byron teaches woodworking as both a skill and a soulful, mindfulness experience. He teaches people to understand the wood and how it feels to work it with traditional edge tools. His workshops are lively, hands-on journeys where laughter mingles with sawdust, and everyone leaves with a smile and a piece of woodwork to be proud of. Byron is a highly qualified educator with a Bachelor of Industrial Design, Graduate Diploma of Education, a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, and 21 years of teaching and technical education experience.
